TOWN HALL HISTORY

On 11th April 1938 the first stone for the new Shire Hall was laid by Shire President Cr. G. C. Smith on the same site as the former Mechanics' Institute building.

Work proceeded rapidly and the official opening took place on 21st October 1938 by local member Sir Herbert Hyland, MLA.  He complimented the Shire residents by stating that it was the first Shire Hall he knew of that had been replaced and not burnt down.  The office staff occupied the down stairs area through the front doors and upstairs was the meeting rooms for the Shire Council.

It took just 30 years for the new hall to be fully paid for at a cost of seven thousand pounds  or $14,000.  From 1986-1988 the Council completed extensions and elterations including erection of a foyer and new kitchen, car park and paving at the front.

In September 1997 the community took over the running of the Town Hall following amalgamation of the Councils.  Today upstairs is the home of the Historical Society and downstairs used by the community volunteers for the local newspaper "The Mirboo North Times".
